Installing Fonts on Your Computer   (For Windows® OS Font Installs)
Use the links immediately below to jump to a specific subject of this font installation tutorial.

System Requirements
  • OpenType fonts (OTF) work with Windows XP and Windows 2000.
  • TrueType fonts (TTF) work with all versions of the Windows operating system.
  • To use PostScript Type 1 fonts, you need to install Adobe Type Manager (ATM) or ATM Deluxe. If you are running Windows XP or 2000, you do not need to install ATM since it is part of the operating system already.
  • If you prefer, you can search the internet for a font management utility and use the software to install and manage your fonts.

After installing fonts, you may need to restart an application or reselect the printer in the application to make the fonts appear in the font list.

Installing OpenType or TrueType Fonts in Windows

We recommend installing only one format - OpenType, TrueType, or PostScript - of a font. Installing two or more formats of the same font may cause problems when you try to use, view, or print the font.

  1. Choose Start > Settings > Control Panel

Note: In Windows XP, choose Start > Control Panel
  2. Double-click the Fonts folder.
  3. Choose File > Install New Font.
  4. Locate the fonts you want to install.

    • In the Drives list, select the drive and the folder containing the fonts you want to install.
    • In the Folders list, select a folder that contains the fonts you want to install. (Make sure you have unzipped them first.) The fonts in the folder appear under List of Fonts.
  5. Select the fonts to install. To select more than one font, hold down the CTRL key and click each font.
  6. To copy the fonts to the Fonts folder, make sure the Copy fonts to the Fonts folder check box is selected.

Note: If installing fonts from a floppy disk or a CD-ROM, you should make sure this check box is selected. Otherwise, to use the fonts in your applications, you must always keep the disk in the disk drive.
  7. Click OK to install the fonts.

Installing PostScript Type 1 Fonts in Windows XP or 2000

PostScript Type 1 support is built into Windows XP and Windows 2000.

Make sure you have unzipped them first.) The fonts in the folder appear under List of Fonts.

Installing PostScript Type 1 Fonts in Windows Me/98/95 or Windows NT

If you are running Windows Me/98/95, or Windows NT, you must use ATM (Adobe Type Manager) to install PostScript Type 1 fonts. You can download Adobe's freely distributable ATM Light for Windows from Adobe's Web site.

If you are running Windows XP or 2000, you do not need to install ATM since it is part of the operating system already.

Installing Truetype Fonts in Windows Vista

The normal procedure for installing True Type fonts in Windows Vista is outlined below. Note that an optional method also exists which is the following: Right-click on Truetype Font (TTF) you would like to add to your computer fonts collection and choose 'Install.' Vista will then ask for Administrative permission; after it is given, the font will be installed without you needing to do anything further. This option is available in other versions of Windows as well but our experience tells us that Vista is the only OS where this method works flawlessly. Your own experience may differ.

To install new fonts into the Windows Vista operating system do the following:

  1. Double-click the Fonts folder.
  2. Choose File > Install New Font.
  3. Locate the fonts you want to install.

    • In the Drives list, select the drive and the folder containing the fonts you want to install.
    • In the Folders list, select a folder that contains the fonts you want to install.

  4. Select the fonts to install. To select more than one font, hold down the CTRL key and click each font.
  6. Click OK to install the fonts.
